Article: How should a wetsuit fit?

How should a wetsuit fit?

A wetsuit should fit like a second skin, but should never be painful, cut off your circulation or restrict your range of movement. Choose a wetsuit that is snug with some pressure. If in between sizes it is recommended you go for the smaller fit, it may feel odd at first, but neoprene will give a little when wet and will stretch with use over time.

Flexibility, durability, and warmth can all be affected by the fit of your wetsuit. A wetsuit that is too tight will reduce its durability as well as your range of motion, conversely, a wetsuit that is too loose will be less effective at keeping you warm. Let’s look at both of these scenarios in more detail.

A wetsuit that is too tight will keep you warm, but it will also restrict your range of motion. This may be uncomfortable and particularly tricky for more vigorous water sports such as surfing. A wetsuit that is too tight will also put unnecessary stress on the fabric and seams, meaning your wetsuit may not last as long as it should.

How do I know if a wetsuit is too small?

  • The sleeves and legs are too short if they end before the ankle and wrist bone.
  • Lifting your arms up creates too much pressure on your arms and shoulders.

A wetsuit that is too loose will be much less effective. Wetsuits work by trapping a small layer of water between your body and the inner lining. Your body heats this water which, in turn, keeps you warm. A loose suit allows the warm water your body has heated to be constantly flushed with cold water, thus eliminating the benefit of wearing a wetsuit.

How do I know if a wetsuit is too big?

  • There are rolls and gaps in the wetsuit.
  • You can grab a handful of neoprene at your back or shoulder.

When trying on a wetsuit you will notice extra neoprene in the armpit. This extra material is referred to as the ‘raglan gusset’ and is there to reduce fabric fatigue in the area while also allowing for full range of motion when paddling. You’ll find this in every wetsuit.
