A high-quality wetsuit should be durable, but there are a few things that we can do to get the most out of our wetsuits. Like with most things in life, a little bit of TLC will go a long way.
Here are some top tips for looking after your wetsuit so that you can enjoy your time in the water for longer.
Be sure to….
- Rinse your wetsuit with freshwater, inside and out, after every use.
- Use cool or lukewarm water as hot water will affect the neoprene’s flexibility.
- If particularly dirty, or to remove any odours, use a cleaner made especially for wetsuits or a mild, liquid soap like baby shampoo. This is a good idea to do occasionally as sand and salt will build up in your wetsuit over time.
- Hang your wetsuit inside out, folded over a line in the shade. Once the inside is dry, turn the right side out to finish drying.
- Once dry, store flat or hanging in a well-ventilated area to avoid mould.
- Store out of direct sunlight.
- Be kind to your wetsuit, do not excessively pull at the seams or rubber.
Be sure NOT to….
- Use bleach, stain removers, washing detergent, fabric softeners or harsh cleaners.
- Put your wetsuit in a washing machine or dryer.
- Dry clean your wetsuit.
- Dry your wetsuit in direct sunlight.
- Hang on a wire hanger
- Hang by the neck or shoulders when wet.
- Iron your wetsuit.
- Leave your wetsuit in the boot of your car.
- Expose your wetsuit to aerosols, oils, solvents, and fuel as this will stain and damage your suit.
- Store your wetsuit with your leash or anything that has velcro, as velcro will tear the fibres of the lining.
- Store in direct sunlight.
- Over fold your wetsuit as this can cause permanent creasing.
